It has been just over two months since Palmer last featured, and Chelsea have sorely missed their star playmaker. The 23-year-old first battled a persistent muscular issue before suffering a fractured toe in an unfortunate accident at home—extending his absence just as he was nearing recovery.

In a creative move, Chelsea designed a custom protective boot for his injured left foot, significantly speeding up his return. He is expected to wear it for the next few matches.

Speaking to the press on Friday, Maresca confirmed:

“He is available for both,” when asked if Palmer was ready to play and start.

The manager highlighted the emotional lift Palmer’s return has brought:

“Everyone is happy. The teammates are happy, we are all happy. The most important thing is that Cole is happy; he needs to play games.”

Maresca didn’t hold back on Palmer’s importance:

“A lot. As you said, he’s probably our best player. We are happy he is back. We need to give him time to make sure he’s 100 per cent fit. He has done fantastic in the past and there is no doubt he will do fantastic in the future.”

Despite only making four appearances this season, Palmer still managed to score twice—a testament to his intelligence, positioning, and finishing.

Without him, Maresca was forced to adjust and experiment:

  • Joao Pedro was deployed as a supporting striker, adding movement in tight spaces.
  • Enzo Fernandez took up the No. 10 role, most notably in the win against Barcelona on Tuesday, where he excelled between the lines.

These solutions have worked at times, but none have quite matched the creative influence Palmer exerts.

Start or Bench?

Ideally, Chelsea would want to ease Palmer back gradually to prevent further setbacks. However, this isn’t just any fixture—it’s second vs first, the defining kind of match that can reshape a title race.

Whether from kickoff or as a dynamic substitute, Palmer’s return gives Chelsea:
vision
calm in tight spaces
incisive final passes
unpredictability in attack

Chelsea have missed their “magic key” in the final third—and now it’s back in Maresca’s hand.
