Benoît Badiashile Addresses Chelsea Future Amid Exit Talk
When Chelsea signed Benoît Badiashile from AS Monaco for a fee of around £32.7 million in January 2023, expectations were high. The French defender was tipped to become a long-term starter at Stamford Bridge. However, just 18 months into his Chelsea career, things have not quite gone to plan.
Limited Role Under Maresca Badiashile has made only 55 appearances in all competitions since joining the Blues, with just 11 of those coming during last season’s UEFA Conference League triumph. Under head coach Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s central defensive hierarchy has shifted significantly.
Currently, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, and new signing Tosin Adarabioyo are seen as the primary options at centre-back when fit, leaving Badiashile as the fifth choice. His limited involvement was reflected in the Premier League last season, where he accumulated just 333 minutes.
Badiashile Commits to Chelsea Despite ongoing speculation over his future, Badiashile has insisted he is not looking to leave the club. Speaking to Footmercato, the 24-year-old reaffirmed his commitment:
“Yes, I will still be at Chelsea next season. The club, the coach, and all the staff give me a lot of confidence and believe in me. I will do everything to give back to them on the pitch. I love the club, the city, and the supporters. I hope to be able to make even more history with this magnificent club.”

What’s Next for the French Defender? Badiashile’s current contract runs until 2030, meaning Chelsea are under no immediate pressure to make a decision on his future. However, there is a growing perception that he may struggle to become a first-choice centre-back under Maresca.
The presence of young talents like Mamadou Sarr, recently signed from Strasbourg, and Aaron Anselmino further complicates the picture. Both players are considered high-potential prospects, with Sarr expected to remain at Stamford Bridge for the 2025–26 campaign.
That said, Badiashile did start Chelsea’s Club World Cup last-16 match against Benfica before picking up an injury — a sign that he remains in Maresca’s plans to some extent.
A Pivotal Season Ahead At 24, Badiashile needs regular football to continue his development. He hasn’t played more than 24 league games in a single top-flight season since 2020–21. Whether he can carve out a more consistent role at Chelsea or will need a move to rediscover that form remains to be seen.
