Chelsea’s talisman Cole Palmer did not take part in Monday’s training session at Cobham ahead of the Blues’ Champions League trip to Atalanta.

The absence was pre-planned and forms part of Palmer’s carefully managed return to full fitness, rather than being caused by any new injury setback.

The 23-year-old has struggled this season with a recurring groin injury, and Chelsea’s medical team have been cautious in ensuring his comeback is gradual. Palmer also endured a fractured toe from a freak accident at home, which delayed his return even further.

Palmer made his first appearance since September 20 when he came on as a 61st-minute substitute in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat to Leeds United, before starting the 0-0 draw with Bournemouth, where he played 58 minutes and was replaced by Joao Pedro.

Despite missing training on Monday, Palmer is expected to be fit and ready to start against Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Monday’s session may give Facundo Buonanotte a chance to feature against Atalanta. The Argentine loanee, who operates in the same No.10 role as Palmer, took part in training and has been used sparingly this season, with only 19 minutes off the bench in last month’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Qarabag.

Palmer’s managed return highlights Chelsea’s careful approach in preserving his fitness for the crucial run of domestic and European fixtures ahead.
