The Real Reason Chelsea Want to Sign Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United

Chelsea’s interest in Alejandro Garnacho has raised eyebrows among supporters, especially after the club secured the signing of Jamie Gittens earlier this summer. Yet, the Blues remain firmly linked with a move for the Manchester United winger—and now the reasoning behind that pursuit has come to light.

According to Football.London’s Bobby Vincent, Chelsea’s pursuit of Garnacho is rooted in a key squad-building strategy under Enzo Maresca and the club’s recruitment team: ensuring two quality players for every position. In this case, Garnacho would join Gittens as the club’s primary left-wing options, allowing young prospect Tyrique George to leave on loan for crucial first-team minutes elsewhere.

Despite initial assumptions that Gittens’ arrival ended Chelsea’s need for another left-sided attacker, the exits of Noni Madueke and Jadon Sancho—alongside Mykhailo Mudryk’s current suspension—have left the Blues thin on the left. While Pedro Neto has played there, he is most effective on the opposite flank, and Xavi Simons, another target, is expected to be used centrally should he sign.

Opportunity in the Market

From a business perspective, the timing may be ideal. Garnacho’s form at United has dipped, and while his stock is currently at a low point, the 20-year-old Argentine was not long ago tipped as a future world star—linked with the likes of Real Madrid.

Now, with United reportedly open to a sale and Garnacho believed to be awaiting Chelsea’s move, the Blues could secure him for as little as £40 million—or less if they delay their bid until later in the window.

ChelseaBrief view

While Garnacho remains a polarising figure, Chelsea’s interest appears to be a calculated decision to strengthen depth on the left, capitalise on a rare market opportunity, and continue building a squad capable of competing across all fronts.

Whether or not Chelsea make a formal offer will depend on how other transfer priorities, such as Xavi Simons and Jorrel Hato, unfold in the coming days.
