Chelsea are edging closer to the signing of 19-year-old Jorrel Hato from Ajax, with talks advancing towards an agreement over a fee in excess of €40 million (£34.8m). According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, personal terms are already agreed with the Dutch international, whose reputation has been rising sharply after two standout Eredivisie seasons.
While Arsenal were keen on Hato back in January 2024, it’s Chelsea who have made the decisive move — a reminder of how highly-rated this young defender is across the continent.
A Leader Beyond His Years
Hato has already made 111 senior appearances and even captained Ajax during a rocky period for the club. While he primarily played as a left-back last season, his natural position is centre-back — where his calmness, timing, and composure shine through.
With six senior caps for the Netherlands and a grounding from Ajax’s elite academy, Hato arrives with both pedigree and potential.
Part of the New Chelsea Blueprint
This is no isolated move. Chelsea’s summer overhaul includes Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Estevao, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr, and Kendry Paez. It’s clear the club is going full throttle on youth-driven regeneration.
Hato fits the model. Technically sharp, composed under pressure, and boasting an 89% pass completion rate — second only to PSV’s Richy Ledezma among Eredivisie full-backs — he’s tailor-made for a modern, ball-dominant side.
As one Dutch analyst put it: “He’s not afraid to be adventurous, either through dribbling or range of passing.”
A Signing That Makes Sense
Let’s be honest: our back line needed this. Chilwell’s fitness is unreliable, Badiashile remains inconsistent, and we’ve been tactically vulnerable in transitions. Hato isn’t just a youth investment — he’s someone who could start Premier League matches within months.
The one concern? Aerial presence. At 19, Hato is still growing into his body, and the physical grind of the Premier League will be a challenge. Turf Moor and Bramall Lane aren’t known for soft welcomes. But with time, and the right coaching, that weakness can be addressed.

This deal feels smart, not splashy. Getting a player with over 100 senior appearances, international caps, and captaincy experience for under £35m in 2025 is borderline elite business.
Jorrel Hato looks like a player for today and tomorrow. Credit to the Chelsea board if they pull this one off — it could be the start of something special.
