Pedro Neto’s Emotional Tribute to Diogo Jota Before Chelsea Game
The football world was shaken by the tragic news of the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, and the sport has rallied around them in grief—but for their loved ones, the pain cuts deepest. One of those most affected is Jota’s Portuguese teammate and close friend Pedro Neto, who paid an emotional tribute before Chelsea’s Club World Cup semi-final with Palmeiras.

A Personal Choice to Play
Prior to the match, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca described the decision to play as firmly Neto’s:
“I spoke to Pedro this morning. We are here to support him—whatever he decides is the correct choice. Whether he plays or not is irrelevant.”

Neto opted to play, and in doing so, honored his friend in the best way he could: by playing with courage and joy.

A Moment of Silence
Before kickoff, as players were being presented to the crowd, Neto emerged from the tunnel with a Chelsea shirt draped over his shoulder. On the back of the shirt were the names “Diogo” and “André”—a subtle yet poignant tribute.

Under the minute’s silence that ensued, Neto kept the shirt raised, accompanied by captain Enzo Fernández, who stood alongside him in solidarity. The act said a lot, a powerful reminder of the bonds that transcend club rivalries.

Playing Through the Pain
Once the whistle blew, Neto invested his emotions in his play. A menace all along the right flank, he tormented Palmeiras’ defense during the first half, competing with a smile that concealed the weight on his mind. The field was his refuge for 90 minutes.

Football usually goes beyond sport in instances such as this. Neto’s homage—and his fortitude in playing—personified the spirit of a man paying tribute to his friend the only way he knew: by doing what both of them loved
