Chelsea Pays Tribute To Diogo Jota Before Club World Cup Clash
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca and his squad paid a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota following the Liverpool forward’s death in a road accident in Spain early on Thursday morning.
Jota, 28, and brother Andre Silva perished in the tragedy in Zamora province. Football has been left reeling, with tributes flowing for the Portuguese international.
Chelsea’s Tribute to Jota
Chelsea players and staff, Maresca, held a minute silence at their Miami training camp ahead of their flight to Philadelphia for their FIFA Club World Cup last-16 tie against Palmeiras on Friday.
During his pre-match press conference, Maresca opened with condolences over the passing of Jota and spoke about the condition of Pedro Neto, one of Jota’s closest friends.
“It’s a very sad day. I am having trouble speaking because it is quite difficult. You are helpless in this kind of scenario. All my love is with his family—this is a huge tragedy for them. With regards to Pedro [Neto], he is very sad, perhaps even more than sad. We are with him by his side in order to support him in this moment.”
As for whether or not Neto would feature against Palmeiras, Maresca said:
“It’s completely Pedro’s choice. I just spoke to him this morning. We’re backing him—whatever he decides is right. Whether he plays or not, it doesn’t matter. We’ll check in on him tomorrow, but we’ll be with him whatever.”
Cucurella’s Emotional Remarks
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella also came up with some remarks about the tragedy, expressing the importance of perspective at such times.
“It’s a awful time. All the family, wife, and children’s love to them from me, the whole Chelsea squad, and football in general. Football doesn’t come into it at times like this. The most important thing is respect and love.”.
“I woke up to see the news. It was tough because anyone can have these things happen to them. It makes one contemplate—life is very valuable. We need to be contented and make each day count.”

Liverpool’s Official Statement
Liverpool issued a statement verifying the tragic news:
“Liverpool Football Club are saddened to hear the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club has been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away in a road traffic accident in Spain, his brother Andre.”.
“Liverpool FC has nothing further to say at this time and asks that Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, colleagues, teammates, and staff are afforded privacy as they come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy. The club will continue to provide full support.”
Football Unites in Grief
The footballing community has rallied round Jota’s family, with players, clubs, and fans worldwide taking to social media to pay their respects. Chelsea’s game against Palmeiras will also include extra tributes of remembrance, with the prekickoff moment of silence set to be held.
As the Blues prepare for their crucial Club World Cup match, the limelight continues to be on humanity and solidarity as they deal with an unfathomable tragedy.
Condolences to Diogo Jota’s family, loved ones, and everyone who has been affected by this sad loss.
