Chelsea Give Pedro Neto Final Say on Playing After Diogo Jota’s Tragic Death

Chelsea Rally Behind Pedro Neto After Diogo Jota’s Tragic Passing

Chelsea winger Pedro Neto has been given full freedom to decide whether he will play in the upcoming Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras, following the devastating news of the death of his Portugal teammate and close friend, Diogo Jota.

Neto, visibly emotional, missed the final training session after learning of Jota’s sudden passing—along with that of Jota’s brother, André. The tragic news has cast a somber mood over the Chelsea camp, but the club has come together in support of their teammate.

Enzo Maresca Offers Unwavering Support: “It’s Completely Pedro’s Decision”

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Neto is being fully supported by the club, emotionally and professionally.

“Pedro is very sad. Probably more than sad,” Maresca said. “We are close to Pedro to support him. It’s completely his decision. I had a chat with him this morning, and we will support him regardless of what he chooses. Whether he plays or not, our support remains the same.”

Maresca, visibly moved, expressed his condolences to Jota’s family and described the moment as one of the most difficult he’s faced in football.

“It’s a very sad day. I struggle to find words—it’s very difficult. The feeling you have is helplessness. All I can offer is my love and condolences to his family. It’s a big tragedy.”

Marc Cucurella: “It Could Be Destiny for Pedro to Score for Jota”

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella revealed how the squad rallied around Neto and encouraged him to take the time he needs to process the loss. He believes that if Neto decides to play, the moment could turn into something powerful.

“In the morning he was very sad—it wasn’t his best moment,” said Cucurella. “But in the afternoon he was a little better. I told him that if he does play, he will score. That would be destiny. It would be for Jota.”

Cucurella emphasized that the entire Chelsea squad stands with Neto and that football, while important, takes a back seat in moments of real-life tragedy.

“Football is not the priority right now. It’s about being there for Pedro, showing him love, and remembering Diogo. Tomorrow could be a beautiful moment if we dedicate the game or a goal to him.”

Chelsea Squad Stands United in Grief and Respect

The atmosphere within the Chelsea dressing room has been filled with emotion, reflection, and unity. According to Cucurella, players and staff alike are leaning on each other for strength.

“It’s a hard moment. We send all our love to Diogo’s family, his wife, his kids—from myself, the squad, and the entire football community. These things remind us that life can change instantly. That’s why we must live every day with purpose and gratitude.”

He concluded with a heartfelt message:

“Diogo loved football. He loved scoring goals. So maybe, tomorrow, Pedro can show that love on the pitch—where Diogo was happiest.”

A Moment Beyond Football

As Chelsea prepare for a major clash on the world stage, their focus has temporarily shifted from trophies to togetherness. Whether Pedro Neto plays or not, the support of his club and teammates is a reminder that football is a family—and in moments of tragedy, family stands tall.
