It may not have technically been his first appearance for the club, but for Dario Essugo it certainly felt like a debut.

The young midfielder came on just after the hour mark in Chelsea FC’s 4-2 FA Cup victory over Wrexham AFC, marking his first competitive involvement of the season.

While Essugo had previously made three appearances during the FIFA Club World Cup, those came shortly after his arrival at Chelsea. The move had actually been agreed months earlier alongside the future transfer of Geovany Quenda, but injuries soon disrupted his progress.

A Promising Start Interrupted

Essugo made a positive impression during the early stages of the Club World Cup, where his energy and defensive awareness suggested he could provide much-needed depth behind Moises Caicedo in midfield.

That role had been an area of concern for Chelsea in recent seasons, making Essugo’s early performances particularly encouraging.

However, momentum was halted when the Portuguese midfielder suffered a hamstring injury severe enough to require surgery.

Just as his recovery appeared close to completion, another setback delayed his return further, extending his absence by several more weeks.

A Debut to Remember

At long last, the long wait ended.

Just one week before his 21st birthday, Essugo stepped onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge and finally experienced what felt like his true Chelsea debut.

And it proved to be a memorable one.

The midfielder impressed both on and off the ball and played a decisive role in extra time, assisting both goals that sealed Chelsea’s victory and progression in the FA Cup.

Essugo Reacts to Emotional Return

Speaking after the match, Essugo admitted the moment meant a great deal after such a difficult spell.

“It is a very good feeling because it was a very tough moment. At a new club, a new experience, but for me, it’s very good to be back. Since the first day I got the injuries I had, I’ve had to wait but now I’m back and I feel very good.”

He also acknowledged the challenge presented by Wrexham.

“It feels very good, it’s a good feeling. It was a tough game. They are a very good team, but we won and it’s perfect for us.”

Midfield Depth Arriving at the Perfect Time

With Essugo returning to action and Romeo Lavia also back available — even if still regaining sharpness — Chelsea’s midfield options are finally beginning to look healthier.

That could prove crucial as Liam Rosenior prepares his side for a run of season-defining fixtures across domestic and European competitions.

After months of waiting, Chelsea may finally have the midfield depth they have been missing.
