“I Was Surprised by the Way I Hit the Ball”
Hato’s goal just before half-time was one of the highlights of the night — a powerful volley that finally broke Charlton’s resistance. Despite its quality, the Dutchman kept his reaction measured.
“I was actually surprised by the way I hit the ball, so I didn’t celebrate too much,” Hato admitted.
“But I’m really happy to score my first goal for Chelsea; it’s a great way to make a mark. I knew straight away the ball was in the net.”
It was a landmark moment for the teenager, who continues to grow in confidence with each appearance in a Chelsea shirt.
Enjoying the Physicality of the FA Cup
The match marked Hato’s first appearance in the FA Cup, the world’s oldest football competition — and it left a strong impression.
“I like these kinds of matches. I love the competition, lots of duels — today’s game was exactly that,” he said.
“It was a good match for me personally and for the whole team. We knew the trip to Charlton would be tough, but I think we handled it.”
Chelsea dominated large spells of the game and created chances consistently, conceding just once in a match that never truly slipped from their control.
“We created a lot of chances and didn’t allow our opponents to score anything, except for one goal,” Hato added.
Early Signs Under Liam Rosenior
Despite limited preparation time, Hato believes Rosenior has already begun to leave his mark on the squad.
“He has his own unique perspective on football. I think it’s the right path, and it suits us,” the defender explained.
“We had a lot of meetings where the coach explained his requirements, because time was very short. I think we showed exactly what he wanted on the pitch today.”
A Promising Start
For Hato, the night at The Valley represented more than just progression to the next round — it was a personal milestone and a glimpse of what could lie ahead under Chelsea’s new manager.
With confidence growing and opportunities opening up, the young defender looks increasingly ready to play a key role in Rosenior’s new era at Stamford Bridge.
