A former assistant treasury manager at Chelsea Football Club has avoided an immediate prison sentence after defrauding the club of more than £200,000 through a long-running ticket refund scheme.
Claire Walsh, 39, admitted dishonestly abusing her position at the club to obtain £208,521.65 between June 8, 2019 and October 23, 2023. She was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court to two years’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months.
How the Fraud Was Carried Out
During the hearing, prosecutor Alex Alawode explained that Walsh exploited Chelsea’s ticket exchange system, which allows season ticket holders to resell seats they cannot use.
Walsh’s role involved administering manual refunds, a responsibility she repeatedly abused.
“No tickets existed – she was simply creating a refund as if a ticket did exist on the sheet,” Alawode told the court.
An internal investigation flagged an unusually high number of manual refunds, all of which were traced back to credit cards in Walsh’s own name.
Judge: ‘A Clear Abuse of Trust’
Sentencing Walsh, Judge Fiona Barrie strongly criticised her actions:
“This is plainly an abuse of trust.
You held a responsible and trusted position in the finance department and were trusted to handle large sums of money, and you used that position to defraud your employer.”
However, the judge acknowledged mitigating factors, noting that Walsh had no previous convictions and that the offence was driven by family pressures.
“This was driven by a desire to help your family who were struggling,” the judge added.
Personal Circumstances and Resignation
Walsh, who had worked at Chelsea since 2007, resigned immediately after being confronted by the club. She told officials that her mother was terminally ill and that she had fallen into debt while attempting to support her family.
She admitted that all of the money had been spent — some on helping her parents, but much of it on gifts, trips and holidays for family and friends.
Sentence and Further Orders
In addition to the suspended prison sentence, Walsh was ordered to:
- Complete up to 25 days of rehabilitation activity
- Carry out 200 hours of unpaid community work
Notably, Chelsea Football Club did not seek compensation or legal costs as part of the sentencing.
