Liam Rosenior has officially begun life as Chelsea head coach, taking charge of his first training session on Thursday afternoon ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup third-round clash against Championship side Charlton Athletic.

The 41-year-old will make his managerial debut in the Blues’ dugout this weekend, just days after being handed the reins at Stamford Bridge.

From the Stands to the Training Pitch

Rosenior watched from the stands on Wednesday night as Chelsea fell to a disappointing defeat against Fulham, a match overseen by interim boss Calum McFarlane. The Under-21s head coach had also taken charge of the previous game against Manchester City before stepping into a new role as Rosenior’s assistant.

Following the Fulham loss, control was officially passed to the new head coach, who wasted little time getting to work at Cobham.

Thursday’s session, however, was not a full-blooded training run. Players who logged heavy minutes against Fulham were placed on recovery duties indoors, limiting Rosenior’s opportunity to fully implement his ideas on day one.

Limited Time, Big Expectations

While there are similarities between Rosenior’s footballing philosophy and that of his predecessor Enzo Maresca, there are also subtle differences the squad will need to adjust to quickly.

With Chelsea travelling to Charlton on Saturday night, time is already against the new manager. Instilling new tactical concepts, building confidence, and managing fatigue all at once is no easy task — especially mid-season.

Even so, it was straight down to business in Surrey as Rosenior began laying the foundations for what he hopes will be a positive start.

Mheuka Involved in First Session

One of the standout names involved in Rosenior’s first training session was Shim Mheuka.

The 18-year-old striker has been in outstanding form for Chelsea’s Under-21s this season, scoring 13 goals for the Development Squad and already earning a senior appearance in the Carabao Cup.

With Rosenior expected to rotate heavily for the FA Cup tie, Mheuka will be desperate to feature — most likely from the bench. His involvement on Thursday gives him a valuable opportunity to make an early impression on the new head coach.

Essugo Returns to Training

There was also encouraging news on the injury front, with Dario Essugo taking part in training.

The 20-year-old midfielder has not featured in a competitive match this season after undergoing thigh surgery in September. Although he was expected to return last month, a setback delayed his comeback during Maresca’s tenure.

Essugo’s presence in Thursday’s session is a welcome boost for a Chelsea side short on central midfield options. Whether he is fit enough to be involved against Charlton remains unclear, but his return to training is a positive step forward.

All Eyes on Rosenior’s Debut

Saturday’s FA Cup clash will offer Chelsea fans their first real glimpse of Rosenior’s ideas in action. While expectations should remain measured, the hope is that a fresh voice and renewed energy can spark a turnaround — starting at The Valley.
