Calum McFarlane will not return to his role as Chelsea Under-21s head coach after his two-match spell as caretaker boss of the first team.
Instead, the highly-rated coach is set to remain with the senior setup after impressing new head coach Liam Rosenior with his attitude, professionalism, and commitment during a turbulent period for the club.
From Caretaker to First-Team Assistant
McFarlane was thrust into the spotlight at short notice following Enzo Maresca’s dismissal, taking charge of the first team for two difficult fixtures.
His brief spell in the dugout saw Chelsea:
- Draw 1-1 away at Manchester City
- Lose 2-1 to Fulham at Craven Cottage
Despite the mixed results, McFarlane earned significant respect behind the scenes for how he handled the pressure and transition.
Rosenior has now decided to keep him involved with the first team rather than sending him back to Cobham.
Change at Under-21 Level Confirmed
With McFarlane staying upstairs, Harry Hudson will step up to become Chelsea’s new Under-21s head coach, having previously served as assistant.
The reshuffle marks another internal promotion and underlines Chelsea’s continued focus on continuity within their academy structure.

McFarlane’s Post-Fulham Comments Took on New Meaning
After Wednesday night’s defeat at Fulham, McFarlane was asked whether he expected his role to change following Rosenior’s arrival.
At the time, he appeared unaware of what was coming next.
“As I’m aware, we’re back with the Under-21s tomorrow. They’re playing tonight. I actually don’t know the score. I’d love to know the score, if anyone knows?”
The answer soon arrived — and not one he would have wanted.
Chelsea’s youth side had suffered a heavy 6-2 defeat to Benfica in the Premier League International Cup, a result that visibly frustrated McFarlane when it was relayed to him.
In hindsight, those comments now feel like the closing chapter of his time leading the U21s.
Rosenior Finalises His Coaching Team
Rosenior had already confirmed that Justin Walker, Kalifa Cissé, and Ben Warner would follow him from Strasbourg to Chelsea as part of his backroom staff.
McFarlane will now join that group as an assistant coach, strengthening the bridge between Chelsea’s academy and first-team environments — something the club has repeatedly spoken about wanting to improve.
A Reward for Stepping Up
McFarlane’s promotion feels like a deserved outcome after answering the call during a chaotic moment for the club.
He steadied the ship, earned the respect of players and staff, and now gets the chance to continue his work at the highest level under a new manager who clearly values his input.
For Rosenior, it’s also a smart move — keeping institutional knowledge inside the building while reshaping Chelsea’s future.
