New Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior was in attendance at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night as the Blues slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Fulham, extending an already worrying run of form.
It was hardly the ideal first live impression for Rosenior, who watched his new side undermine themselves once again through poor discipline and patchy individual performances.
Cucurella Red Card Sums Up Chelseaโs Discipline Issues
Rosenior would not have been impressed by Marc Cucurellaโs needless red card in the 22nd minute, which left Chelsea chasing the game with ten men for over an hour.
The dismissal marked Chelseaโs seventh sending-off of the season, a damning statistic that underlines a recurring lack of control and game management. From that moment on, any tactical plan was effectively torn up.
Mixed Night for Palmer and Neto
There were also concerns further forward. Cole Palmer, still working his way back to full sharpness after injury, delivered a mixed display and struggled to impose himself consistently.
Pedro Neto was similarly inconsistent. While the Portuguese winger was involved in Chelseaโs equaliser โ delivering the corner that eventually led to Liam Delapโs goal โ his overall output left plenty to be desired.
Yet despite that, Neto still caught the eye of the opposition manager.
Marco Silva Praises Netoโs Ball Carrying
Fulham boss Marco Silva highlighted Neto as one of Chelseaโs more dangerous players, particularly in transition.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, as quoted on Fulhamโs official website, Silva said:
โI believe that second half, we did switch off sometimes, and because of that we gave some offensive transitions for them and dangerous moments from them โ Neto carried the ball very well, or some moments with Palmer.โ
It was a nod to Netoโs direct dribbling and pace, even on a night when his end product didnโt quite match his intent.
A Damning Crossing Statistic
Despite Silvaโs praise, the numbers paint a worrying picture.
According to Sofascore, Neto attempted 12 crosses, with just one finding its target โ a particularly alarming return given Chelsea had a physical presence like Delap leading the line.
With quality delivery expected from wide areas, especially when playing with a traditional centre-forward, this was a major shortcoming.
Competition Heating Up Under Rosenior
Neto started the game on the left wing, despite spending much of the season on the right. How Rosenior chooses to deploy the 25-year-old going forward will be one of the early selection debates of the new era.
With fierce competition in Chelseaโs wide areas, Neto will need to sharpen his decision-making and delivery quickly if he wants to cement his place in the starting XI.
For Rosenior, this defeat offered a clear snapshot of the challenges ahead โ indiscipline, inconsistency, and plenty of raw ability still searching for cohesion.
