Chelsea are on the verge of appointing Liam Rosenior as their new manager, with sources telling ChelseaBrief that the 41-year-old has accepted a crucial condition tied to the role at Stamford Bridge.
Rosenior has also made it clear to Chelseaโs hierarchy that he would like to bring members of his Strasbourg coaching staff with him should the move be finalised.
Deal advancing rapidly after London talks
We understand that Rosenior travelled to London over the weekend to finalise terms following the departure of Enzo Maresca on New Yearโs Day. Strasbourg, where Rosenior is currently head coach, is also owned by BlueCo, Chelseaโs ownership group.
Sources indicate that discussions are progressing quickly, raising the possibility that Rosenior could take charge of Chelsea as early as Wednesdayโs Premier League clash against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Marescaโs exit on January 1 followed growing tension with the clubโs hierarchy, combined with a dip in results.
Why Chelsea want Rosenior
Chelseaโs owners see Rosenior as an ideal fit for their youth-focused, possession-based philosophy. The former full-back, who enjoyed a playing career with clubs including Fulham, Reading and Brighton & Hove Albion, has impressed since taking charge of Strasbourg in 2024.
Last season, Rosenior guided Le Racing to a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1, securing qualification for the 2025/26 Conference League. His work developing young players and implementing progressive tactics has earned widespread praise.
Several of Chelseaโs sporting directors are also familiar with Rosenior from his previous roles, strengthening his candidacy.

Coaching staff plans and interim situation
After overseeing a 1-1 draw with Nice at the Allianz Riviera on Saturday, Rosenior flew to London on January 4 alongside Strasbourg president Marc Keller and sporting director David Weir.
Formal interviews and contract discussions are now well advanced at Cobham, with interim head coach Calum McFarlane โ who earned a creditable 1-1 draw away at Manchester City on Sunday โ expected to step aside once an appointment is confirmed.
Sources say Rosenior is keen to bring Justin Walker, Khalifa Cisse and Filipe Coelho with him from Strasbourg. While this still requires final approval, Coelho โ appointed by BlueCo last summer โ is the most likely to remain and help oversee a transitional period.
January transfer plans
Chelsea are not expected to be busy in the January transfer window. The board believes the current squad is strong enough overall, a view Rosenior reportedly shares and has accepted as part of negotiations.
That said, the club will remain alert to opportunistic or smart deals should they arise.
Gary OโNeil a candidate to replace Rosenior at Strasbourg
Roseniorโs appointment is also dependent on BlueCo securing a suitable replacement at Strasbourg to avoid unrest among supporters, who have expressed concerns about the multi-club ownership model.
One leading candidate is Gary OโNeil, currently out of work after spells with Bournemouth and Wolves.
The Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg reports that OโNeil is โemerging as a contenderโ for the Strasbourg job, noting that three candidates are being whittled down to two, with a decision expected imminently.
Chelsea convinced despite doubts
While some observers question whether the Chelsea job represents too big a step too soon โ given Roseniorโs managerial experience at Derby County, Hull City and Strasbourg โ the clubโs leadership believes he is a seamless fit for their long-term project.
Rosenior is understood to fully grasp the BlueCo model and is viewed as being closely aligned with the ownersโ vision.
With official confirmation expected soon, Chelsea fans may not have to wait long to see Rosenior in the dugout โ potentially making his debut against former club Fulham in a high-stakes London derby.
