Chelsea assistant Willy Caballero has explained why Enzo Maresca was unable to speak to the media following the Blues’ frustrating 2-2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
The result compounded a difficult run of form for Chelsea, who are struggling to maintain momentum in the race for a top-four finish. Having followed up a 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa, the draw leaves Chelsea with just one win from their last seven league matches.

According to Sky Sports News, Maresca was unable to fulfil his post-match media duties due to illness. The Italian coach reportedly felt unwell in the days leading up to the fixture and returned straight to the dressing room after the final whistle.
Caballero, who stepped in to address the media, explained the situation:
“He didn’t feel well in the last two days; he had a bit of a temperature two days ago.
In the last two sessions, he wanted to prepare the team well for this game, but after the game, he went to the changing room and asked me to replace him because he didn’t feel well.”
Despite his condition, Maresca had insisted on personally overseeing Chelsea’s final training sessions ahead of the midweek clash.
Concerns Ahead of Manchester City Trip
The timing of Maresca’s illness could hardly be worse, with Chelsea preparing for a daunting away trip to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium to kick off 2026.
Caballero was unable to confirm whether the head coach would be fit enough to return to the dugout for the clash against the reigning champions, adding further uncertainty at a critical point in the season.

Beyond the manager’s health concerns, Chelsea’s coaching staff must urgently address the recurring defensive issues that once again undermined the team. Bournemouth capitalised on poor organisation from long throws, a weakness that has now repeatedly punished the Blues.
