Chelsea will come face-to-face with Antoine Semenyo on Tuesday evening when Bournemouth visit Stamford Bridge — but any potential transfer interest from the Blues appears to have cooled.
Chelsea were among the clubs linked with the Bournemouth winger earlier this season and are understood to have made an enquiry just before Christmas. However, Enzo Maresca is now believed to be content with the wide options already at his disposal.
Semenyo’s Standout Season Draws Elite Interest
Semenyo has enjoyed a sensational campaign at the Vitality Stadium, scoring eight Premier League goals so far. He added to that tally over the weekend, finding the net in Bournemouth’s 4-1 defeat to Brentford.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham, and most notably Manchester City all monitoring his situation. Reports suggest City are now leading the race to sign the Ghana international during the January transfer window.
The 25-year-old has a £65 million release clause, which must be triggered before January 10.
Chelsea Step Back From the Race
Earlier reports claimed Chelsea had joined the chase for Semenyo after he impressed the club’s recruitment team during his time at Bristol City. However, fresh updates indicate Maresca has opted against pushing for a January move.
The Chelsea head coach is happy to keep faith in his current group of wingers, with competition for places already intense at Stamford Bridge.
That decision could come back to haunt Chelsea, with Semenyo expected to start for Bournemouth on Tuesday and capable of causing problems down the flanks.
Two Teams Seeking Momentum
Bournemouth arrive in west London desperate to arrest a worrying slump in form. The Cherries were second in the Premier League in October, but have since slipped to 15th, collecting just four points from their last nine league matches.
Chelsea’s situation is not much brighter. The Blues have managed just one win in their last five league games and will be eager to reignite their season in front of a home crowd.
Iraola: “The More Antoine Plays for Us, the Better”
Following Bournemouth’s defeat to Brentford, head coach Andoni Iraola was asked whether the club would prefer to cash in on Semenyo early in January.
The Spaniard made his stance clear:
“No, the more games Antoine can play for us, the better. If he can play years for us, it’s much better. If it cannot be years, it can be months. If he can only play weeks, it is weeks — but the more time he plays with us, the better for us.”
Iraola underlined Semenyo’s importance, even on off-days:
“Antoine’s situation is quite clear. Antoine is a massive player for us and even in games like today, where probably he hasn’t played well, he is always a threat to score and assist.”
Despite transfer uncertainty, the Bournemouth boss confirmed Semenyo will remain involved:
“Obviously I don’t want to lose him. But there are some situations that are not under my control. He will be available to play again in three days [against Chelsea] and then the next one. And I hope he plays a lot more with us.”
Chelsea may no longer be pursuing Antoine Semenyo, but they still have to stop him on the pitch. With Bournemouth fighting to turn their season around and Semenyo playing for a potential big move, the winger could be one of the key figures under the Stamford Bridge lights.
