Chelsea Handed Potential Advantage as Disciplinary Verdict Nears
Chelsea may have one significant advantage as disciplinary proceedings into alleged rule breaches move closer to a conclusion.
That is the view of former Everton, Aston Villa and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the situation surrounding the Blues.
The Charges Facing Chelsea
Chelsea are currently under investigation for 74 alleged breaches relating to agent payments made between 2009 and 2022, during the ownership of Roman Abramovich.
The case is being reviewed by an Independent Regulatory Commission, though there is still no clear timeline for when a verdict will be announced. Possible punishments range from a financial fine to a sporting sanction, including a points deduction โ a scenario that could significantly impact Enzo Marescaโs side.
Chelsea would retain the right to appeal any points deduction should one be imposed.
Why Chelsea May Avoid a Points Deduction
Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insiderโs Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested Chelsea are unlikely to face a sporting penalty. Crucially, he believes the club helped their own cause by self-reporting the violations following the change of ownership.
Wyness, who served as Evertonโs chief executive from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a consultancy advising elite clubs, pointed to the context of the breaches as a key mitigating factor.
โI think itโs in Chelseaโs favour that they were the ones to report these violations. All of this happened under the previous owners.
โTherefore, I believe these are very compelling mitigating circumstances. I think Chelsea are expecting a financial penalty, not a sporting penalty in the form of a points loss.โ
Financial Fine the Most Likely Outcome?
Wynessโ assessment aligns with growing belief in football circles that Chelsea will escape a points deduction altogether. The fact the alleged breaches occurred before Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took control โ combined with the clubโs cooperation โ appears to weigh heavily in their favour.
Given the considerable financial resources available to Chelseaโs current ownership, a monetary fine would be far easier to absorb than any sporting punishment.
And frankly, it would be a surprise if the authorities chose to penalise the current squad and management for issues tied to a previous regime.
What It Means for Chelsea Going Forward
While nothing is guaranteed until a verdict is announced, the signs point towards Chelsea avoiding the worst-case scenario. A financial sanction would allow Marescaโs side to continue their on-pitch rebuild without the added pressure of a points deficit hanging over their season.
For now, Chelsea wait โ but there is cautious optimism that the club will come through this process largely unscathed.
