Chelsea legend John Terry has urged the club to move away from its recent transfer strategy of targeting young players and instead make a surprise move for a familiar face when the January transfer window opens.

Terry believes the Blues should look to bring Thiago Silva back to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer, adding much-needed experience to Enzo Marescaโ€™s youthful squad.

Chelsea Eye January Reinforcements

Chelsea are expected to reinforce their squad next month as they look to maintain a top-four Premier League challenge and progress into the latter stages of the Champions League under Maresca.

While several recent attacking signings have struggled to make an immediate impact, it is defence where Chelsea appear particularly short on numbers and leadership.

Defensive Concerns at Stamford Bridge

At present, Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah form Chelseaโ€™s first-choice centre-back pairing.

Fofana has endured repeated injury setbacks since arriving from Leicester City, while Chalobah only secured his place back in the squad last season after being recalled from a loan spell at Crystal Palace.

The lack of depth and experience at the heart of defence has been exposed in key moments this season.

A Proven Winner: Thiago Silvaโ€™s Chelsea Legacy

Thiago Silva originally joined Chelsea as a free agent five years ago.

After a brief adjustment period, the Brazilian quickly became a club legend, playing a pivotal role in Chelseaโ€™s Champions League triumph under Thomas Tuchel.

His leadership, composure, and tactical intelligence transformed Chelseaโ€™s defence during one of the clubโ€™s most successful modern eras.

Strong Ties Remain

The now 41-year-old left Stamford Bridge last year, but his links with Chelsea remain strong.

Notably, Silvaโ€™s two sons are currently enrolled in Chelseaโ€™s academy, and his contract with Fluminense has recently expired โ€” making a short-term return a genuine possibility.

John Terry: โ€˜Iโ€™d Love to See Him Backโ€™

Speaking passionately about the idea, Terry highlighted the value Silva could still offer โ€” even without playing every week.

โ€œThiago Silva is available. Listen to me โ€” a man with great experience, a man with a great relationship with our football club,โ€ Terry said.

โ€œHis two kids are in our academyโ€ฆ I would love to see this man back at our football club, playing alongside these players.โ€

Terry compared Silvaโ€™s potential role to his own under Antonio Conte during Chelseaโ€™s 2016โ€“17 title-winning season.

โ€œI didnโ€™t play every week, but I had a role โ€” being that buffer between the players, the manager and the owners. Thiago certainly brings that.โ€

Leadership Beyond the Pitch

Terry stressed that Silvaโ€™s influence would extend far beyond matchdays.

โ€œSometimes when youโ€™re going through a tough spell or even a good spell, you need to know what to say and when to say it,โ€ he added.

โ€œThiago Silva back at Chelsea would make everyone very happy โ€” me included.โ€

Gallas Agrees: Experience Is Missing

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas echoed Terryโ€™s concerns, insisting the lack of experienced leaders is costing the Blues.

โ€œFor me, itโ€™s always a problem when a team doesnโ€™t have experienced players,โ€ Gallas told OLBG.

โ€œWhen Thiago Silva left, Chelsea didnโ€™t replace him with another experienced defender โ€” and thatโ€™s why mistakes have crept in.โ€

No Leader at the Back?

Gallas believes Chelseaโ€™s biggest issue is the absence of a clear organiser at the back.

โ€œWhen you play against the big clubs, you need someone leading the defensive line,โ€ he said.

โ€œAt Chelsea, no one is doing that. The defenders are focused on their own roles โ€” not the line itself.โ€

Final Thoughts

Rather than investing in another raw prospect this January, voices from Chelseaโ€™s past are calling for a short-term, low-risk solution rooted in experience.

A return for Thiago Silva may not align with Chelseaโ€™s long-term recruitment model โ€” but as John Terry and William Gallas argue, it could provide exactly what Enzo Marescaโ€™s side currently lacks: leadership, calm, and authority at the back.
