Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has sparked major backlash after launching yet another attack on Mohamed Salah following the forward’s recent outburst against the club and manager Arne Slot.
Salah, who was benched for three consecutive matches, publicly accused Liverpool of making him a scapegoat for their slump in form. He also claimed his relationship with Slot had “broken,” escalating tensions around his future. As a result, Salah has now been left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad to face Inter Milan — widely viewed as disciplinary action.
Carragher’s Response
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher did not hold back. Referencing Salah’s early career struggles, he said (via Sky Sports):
“One thing I want to remind Mohamed Salah and maybe his agent — before he came to Liverpool, Mo Salah was known as the guy who failed at Chelsea. That’s just a fact.”
Carragher went on to question Salah’s international legacy:
“He’s the greatest player Egypt has ever had… but he hasn’t won AFCON. That tells him it’s not about an individual. No matter how good you are, you need help from your teammates, the manager, and the fans.”
Carragher concluded by accusing Salah of making the situation all about himself:
“When he’s talking there, it’s all ‘me, me, me.’ It’s important he remembers that.”

Carragher Has Lost the Plot
Criticising Salah’s recent form? Fair. Scrutinising his attitude? Also fair.
But dragging up Chelsea — a decade-old chapter — diminishing his impact for Egypt, and twisting a generational career into a negative narrative? That’s where Carragher crossed the line.
Salah isn’t just another Liverpool player. He is a club legend. Without him, half of the club’s greatest modern triumphs wouldn’t exist:
- A Champions League title
- A Premier League title after 30 years
- Multiple golden boots
- Countless iconic moments that reshaped Liverpool’s identity
If anyone has earned the right to be cut some slack, it’s Mohamed Salah.
Carragher Missed the Bigger Picture
This could have been a moment for Carragher to show leadership — to offer calm, perspective, and nuance during a period of tension. Instead, he chose the easy route: a sensationalist TV take that fuels the fire rather than cooling it.
Salah’s comments were emotional and self-interested, yes. But he has delivered at a historic level for club and country. Carragher, more than anyone, should understand the value of respect for those who have carried Liverpool through their most successful era in decades.
Instead, he took the bait.
