Former United captain says Chelsea are still miles from title contention despite recent optimism.
Gary Neville didn’t hold back as he labelled Chelsea a “mess” following their shock 3–1 defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road. After an encouraging performance and result against Arsenal, Chelsea reverted to old habits — and Neville made sure to point the finger.

Chelsea went into half-time trailing 2–0 through goals from Jaka Bijol and Ao Tanaka. Pedro Neto then pulled one back early in the second half, but the turning point was a disastrous sequence in Chelsea’s own six-yard box:
- Malo Gusto played a risky pass backward
- Tosin Adarabioyo failed to control
- Okafor capitalized, Sanchez couldn’t recover
- Calvert-Lewin tapped in for 3–1
A catastrophic defensive comedy — and Neville’s reaction was immediate.
Neville’s verdict
During live Sky Sports commentary, Neville said:
“What a mess. Chelsea’s defenders have been poor on the ball all night… What are you doing trying to control it and play it back in there?”
He continued:
“It’s a nightmare for Maresca, a dream for Leeds… The centre-backs on the ball have been sloppy all night.”
Neville went further than just blaming individual errors — he called out Chelsea’s title credentials entirely:
“I think they will be top four or five no problem. But when we talk about winning the league, they are short in goal, short at centre-back and short up top.”
According to Neville, Chelsea’s:
- Goalkeeper
- Centre-backs
- Centre-forwards
…are not yet at the level needed to win the Premier League.
What this means going forward
Chelsea’s performance against Arsenal hinted at momentum — aggressive pressing, control in midfield, defensive solidity. But this collapse at Leeds reignited familiar issues: lapses in concentration, risky passing at the back, and lack of leadership in tense moments.
It’s a reminder that this Chelsea side is still very much a work-in-progress under Enzo Maresca. They have flashes of brilliance, tons of young talent, but — as Neville bluntly summarized — not yet the consistency or stability of champions.
