Josh Acheampong: Chelsea’s academy gem pushing for more minutes
After another summer filled with expensive signings, it’s almost poetic that one of Chelsea’s breakout performers this season has been Josh Acheampong, a Cobham graduate who’s impressed with his maturity and defensive discipline. Promoted to the first team a year ago, his rise has been fast — but his recent lack of minutes is raising frustration among fans and even former players.
Gary Cahill has publicly stated he wants to see more of Acheampong in a Chelsea shirt, and many supporters agree. After starting three straight Premier League matches in October, the young defender hasn’t played in any of the last four.
It’s not a lack of ability keeping Acheampong out — quite the opposite. Enzo Maresca told journalist Lloyd Canfield that the only reason Josh isn’t playing more is the form of Chelsea’s other defenders:
“He’s very good… Our central defenders are doing very well. Wes is doing well, Trev is doing well. Josh is doing well. It’s just a matter of finding the right moment when we give him the chance.”

“He's very good. The only thing, I mean, it’s something nice for me, and it's something nice for the club, is that at the moment our central defenders are doing very well.
Both Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah have been excellent recently, starting key matches against Barcelona and Arsenal. Their resurgence is great news for Chelsea — but it also limits opportunities for the rising star waiting behind them.
Interest from Europe — and a warning for Chelsea
If Chelsea don’t move quickly, they risk losing one of their brightest academy products. Acheampong has drawn attention from several top European clubs, including:
Fiorentina (most recent links)
Previously Real Madrid and Manchester City
That level of interest speaks volumes: Chelsea have a serious talent on their hands — one they can’t afford to develop for someone else’s benefit.
Opportunity ahead: Leeds United
Chelsea’s festive schedule is brutal — and that’s a blessing for Acheampong. Squad rotation is necessary, and the upcoming clash with Leeds could provide the perfect opening for him to get back on the pitch and remind everyone why he’s rated so highly.
