Chelsea’s newest signing Alejandro Garnacho is wasting no time in trying to reignite his international career as he looks to secure a place in Argentina’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

The 21-year-old winger made his debut for the Blues at the weekend, coming off the bench in the 2-2 draw against Brentford. Garnacho immediately made an impression, showing flashes of his trademark flair and playing a key role in Moises Caicedo’s goal. However, he was also partly at fault for Brentford’s late equaliser, as Fabio Carvalho found space at the back post to level the game.

Emergency Call from Lionel Scaloni

Following his debut, Garnacho received a call from Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni. According to reports, the Chelsea winger privately asked Scaloni, “Is there room for me?” The Argentina boss replied, “Yes, but keep in mind you’re starting from behind. You’ll have to prove a lot to return to the National Team.”

Garnacho has endured a stop-start international career so far. He was first called up to the senior squad in March 2022 but didn’t make an appearance. A year later, he had to withdraw due to an ankle injury before finally making his senior debut in June 2023, coming off the bench in a friendly against Australia.

He was included in Argentina’s victorious Copa America 2024 squad but played only in the final group-stage game. His last international appearance came in November 2024, featuring briefly in a World Cup qualifier defeat to Paraguay.

A Fresh Start After Manchester United Exit

Garnacho’s club career has been just as eventful. After falling out with Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim — first being dropped for the Manchester derby in December 2024 and later voicing frustration over limited minutes in the Europa League final — he made a £40 million move to Chelsea this summer.

Despite the criticism surrounding his attitude, Chelsea see Garnacho as a major coup. He made 144 appearances for United, and at just 21, his best years are still ahead of him.

Eyes on Bayern Munich — and Manchester United

Garnacho could make his Champions League debut for Chelsea on Wednesday night when they face Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. The fixture offers him an immediate chance to showcase his talent on the European stage.

And just days later, he will have the perfect opportunity to send a message to his former club as Chelsea host Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

World Cup Motivation

Beyond Chelsea, Garnacho is clearly motivated by the prospect of representing Argentina at the 2026 World Cup — a tournament that could mark the final international appearance of Lionel Messi. With Scaloni’s challenge ringing in his ears, the winger will be desperate to prove his worth over the coming months.
