Chelsea Already Planning 2026 Moves as Maresca Pushes for Centre-Back Reinforcements
Chelsea may be just weeks removed from a busy summer transfer window, but Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the club are already working on their plans for January and beyond.
The Blues spent heavily this summer, bringing in Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Alejandro Garnacho, Jorrel Hato and Jamie Gittens, while also competing in and winning the Club World Cup. Despite the investment, manager Enzo Maresca was reportedly left unsatisfied, frustrated that some of his key positional targets were not signed before deadline day.
Chelsea’s January Priorities
According to Romano, Chelsea are prioritizing the addition of a young centre-back, with their recruitment team tracking “many talents” abroad.
“I’m told Chelsea are looking at several opportunities for example at centre back,” Romano said. “If there’s a young player with some good quality then for Chelsea, ‘it’s always time’ for a good opportunity, currently tracking many talents especially from abroad.”
Maresca’s Push for Defensive Reinforcements
Maresca has been vocal about the need for another defender, especially after losing Levi Colwill to a long-term injury before the season began. Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo have shouldered most of the minutes so far, but with Champions League football back on the calendar, rotation will become crucial.
Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana and academy talent Josh Acheampong are all options, but Maresca appears keen to add a more reliable and immediate solution at the heart of defence.
Youth vs. Experience Dilemma
Some fans may question whether Chelsea truly need another young defender, with Aaron Anselmino and Mamadou Sarr both impressing on loan. However, Maresca’s desire for a signing suggests he wants a centre-back capable of stepping straight into his first-choice XI.
With months still to go until the January window opens, Chelsea’s recruitment team will be working to identify the ideal candidate who fits the club’s long-term project — and Maresca’s immediate needs.
