Chelsea star Moises Caicedo had a night of mixed emotions on Tuesday as he was sent off in Ecuador’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in World Cup qualifying.

The 23-year-old midfielder had missed Ecuador’s previous game against Paraguay due to physical discomfort, leaving Chelsea fans slightly worried about his fitness. But he returned to the starting XI against the world champions — a welcome sight for both club and country.

Ecuador secured a famous win thanks to a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time, but Caicedo’s evening ended prematurely when he received a second yellow card just five minutes after the restart.

Suspension Confirmed – But Not When Chelsea Fans Hoped

Because this was the last World Cup Qualifier of the current cycle, Caicedo’s suspension will be served during Ecuador’s opening match of the World Cup next summer rather than the next international break.

Many Chelsea supporters were quietly hoping Caicedo’s ban would rule him out of the next round of qualifiers, giving him a rare rest during the demanding 2025/26 season. Instead, he is expected to be available for Ecuador in the next break, meaning more minutes for a player who started all 38 Premier League games last season.

With Chelsea fighting on multiple fronts, Enzo Maresca may need to manage Caicedo carefully to avoid burnout.

Dario Essugo Injury Setback

Chelsea brought in Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon this summer to help share the midfield load, but the 20-year-old will have to wait for his Premier League bow after suffering a thigh injury while on international duty with Portugal’s U21 side.

Essugo has already undergone successful surgery but is now facing an extended spell on the sidelines. The setback slightly weakens Chelsea’s midfield depth heading into a congested fixture schedule.

There was one positive update, however — Romeo Lavia has returned to Cobham and resumed full training, which could give Maresca a much-needed rotation option in the coming weeks.
