Florent Malouda Warns Enzo Maresca Over Cole Palmer

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has enjoyed a strong start to life in the Premier League, but club legend Florent Malouda has issued him a word of caution regarding the management of arguably his most important player – Cole Palmer.

Maresca has already achieved something no other manager has under Todd Boehly’s ownership: surviving beyond a single season in charge. After winning two trophies and guiding Chelsea back into the Champions League, he has earned the faith of the hierarchy and the fans.

Still, the Italian was reportedly left frustrated by some aspects of the summer transfer window and is already dealing with early-season injury headaches. Cole Palmer, who was Chelsea’s standout performer last season, has missed two of the first three games of the campaign.

Malouda’s Message to Maresca

Palmer’s scan results were not negative, but his fitness for Chelsea’s next two games – against Brentford in the league and Bayern Munich in the Champions League – remains uncertain.

Speaking to Simon Phillips’ Substack, Malouda urged Maresca to strike a balance between protecting Palmer and ensuring he remains on the pitch when it matters most.

Florent Malouda:
“Enzo Maresca needs to be very careful with Cole Palmer and I think he is careful with the way he manages him, but you must play your best players.

“Obviously, Cole Palmer is young, but in the manager’s position, you want results. It’s not like you have time and you can spare a few games here and there. You need to have your best players, and sometimes your best players are not in their best physical form, but they still have an impact on the team.

“I think he will try to give him some rest. There’s a World Cup coming, but the priority is to perform for the club.”

Chelsea Coping Without Palmer

Even without their talisman, Chelsea have looked sharp. The Blues recorded back-to-back wins over West Ham and Fulham, extending their unbeaten start to the season.

Summer signing Joao Pedro has kept up his goalscoring form, while 18-year-old Estevao Willian continues to impress fans with his maturity and attacking flair.

Still, with a huge clash against Bayern Munich just around the corner, Chelsea will be desperate to have Palmer back on the pitch — even if he isn’t at 100%.
