Chelsea’s reunion with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League Round of 16 is shaping up to be a blockbuster — and it could come with the return of one of Europe’s most decisive attackers.
Ousmane Dembele, who has been nursing a calf problem in recent weeks, is reportedly on course to be available for the tie against Chelsea FC.
According to L’Equipe, Dembélé is expected to be included in the squad to face AS Monaco this weekend — a clear indication that he is building fitness ahead of the European clash.
Rosenior Chasing What Mourinho Couldn’t
For Liam Rosenior, this tie presents a historic opportunity.
Chelsea are hunting a third Champions League crown — and Rosenior has the chance to achieve something that Jose Mourinho was unable to manage: eliminating PSG at this stage of the competition.
There is history here. There is narrative. And there is unfinished business.
The Dembélé Factor
Much of the hype before the clubs’ most recent meeting — in the Club World Cup final — centered around the individual duel between Dembélé and Cole Palmer.
On the night, Palmer arguably came out on top.
But when awards season arrived, it was Dembélé who lifted the Ballon d’Or.
Despite an injury-hit campaign, the French forward has remained decisive. In Ligue 1 alone, he has registered 12 goal involvements in 14 appearances — elite numbers by any measure.
If fully fit, he is expected to line up in a dangerous front three alongside:
- Désiré Doué
- Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
Kvaratskhelia, notably, is a player Chelsea have previously shown strong interest in signing — adding another subplot to an already layered contest.
Scheduling Advantage for PSG
Chelsea are already aware they may face a structural disadvantage across the two legs.
PSG’s Ligue 1 fixture between the Round of 16 matches has been postponed, allowing them recovery time and focused preparation.
In contrast, Chelsea face a relentless March schedule — eight matches across three competitions.
Rotation, squad depth, and injury management will be decisive.
Chelsea Injury Optimism
There is, however, cautious positivity within the Chelsea camp.
Marc Cucurella is progressing well in his recovery, with Rosenior recently delivering an encouraging update on the defender’s fitness.
There is also hope that Estevao Willian can return in time to influence the tie. The Brazilian has already scored three goals in this season’s Champions League campaign and has emerged as a key attacking figure in Europe.
