Chelsea have received plenty of criticism for their youth-heavy recruitment strategy over the past two years, but the club remains committed to building a squad packed with promising young talent. This summer alone, the Blues added Jorrel Hato, Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens and Estevão to Enzo Maresca’s squad.
Among the group sits Liam Delap. At 22, he still qualifies as a prospect, but he is at the stage where potential must start turning into consistent performances. If he cannot provide that soon, Cobham may already have a rising star ready to surpass him at both club and international level.
Delap’s Path Into the England Squad
Despite Thomas Tuchel possessing one of England’s strongest squads in years, a major talking point during this international break has been the lack of reliable backup strikers behind Harry Kane.
Ivan Toney is currently playing in the Saudi Pro League, Ollie Watkins has just one goal in 16 matches this season, and Dominic Solanke is sidelined with injury. The situation has become so thin that discussions have begun about recalling Danny Welbeck, who turns 35 this month. He may deserve consideration based on form, but he is not a long-term option.
This creates an unexpected window for Delap. Despite playing in a struggling Ipswich Town side last season, he still managed 12 goals and two assists across 37 matches. If he can rediscover that level, there is a realistic chance he could enter the World Cup conversation.
If he cannot, however, he risks being overtaken by one of Cobham’s most exciting attacking talents in years.
The Chelsea Academy Gem Who Could Surpass Delap
Cobham has a long history of producing Premier League-calibre players, and Shumaira Mheuka appears to be the next standout forward emerging from the academy.

The 18-year-old striker began his youth career at Brighton before joining Chelsea in 2022. Since then, his development has been rapid. Last season, despite being just 16 when the campaign began, he recorded 11 goals and three assists in 30 matches across the Under-18s and Under-21s.
This season, Mheuka’s numbers have reached another level.
Mheuka’s Youth Record
- Appearances: 61
- Goals: 34
- Assists: 9
- Goal involvements per match: 0.70
- This season: 13 goals and three assists in 12 games (997 minutes)
This works out to an extraordinary 1.33 goal involvements per game—one every 62 minutes. Talent scout Jacek Kulig has described him as “Cobham’s finest” and “the future of Chelsea and English football.”

Mheuka has impressed on the international stage as well, scoring 14 goals and providing three assists in 20 appearances for England’s Under-19s.
The Verdict
Delap remains a talented forward with the potential to become an England international in the near future. But Chelsea’s expectations are high, and opportunities at the top level are limited. If he does not begin producing consistently, Shumaira Mheuka is well positioned to overtake him and become the club’s next major striker.
When Cobham produces a player of Mheuka’s quality, the pressure on others only increases. For Delap, the message is clear: now is the time to deliver.
