Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has been labelled a “habitual offender” by a magistrate after being convicted of his tenth driving offence, resulting in a further fine and penalty points despite already serving a long-term driving ban.
The 25-year-old French international failed to appear in court on Friday and was fined £1,062, with three additional penalty points added to his record.
Latest Incident Details
Fofana was caught speeding at 1:30am on February 27, 2024, on the A316 Chertsey Road in Twickenham, West London.
Driving a £300,000 Rolls Royce Cullinan, Chelsea’s £70 million defender was recorded travelling at 54mph in a 40mph zone, according to reports.
Prosecutor Kari Williamson told the court:
“The defendant was caught by means of an automatic camera at 1.30am driving 54mph in a 40mph zone.
His driving record shows he is disqualified. He is a non-UK licence holder and is disqualified until May 13, 2027 for an offence of dangerous driving.”
Court Labels Fofana a ‘Habitual Offender’
Magistrate Alan Jefferson was blunt in his assessment:
“It’s obvious that he’s a habitual offender. We have taken into consideration his income and early guilty plea. His licence record will be endorsed with three penalty points.”
The fine handed down consisted of:
- £666 financial penalty
- £266 victim surcharge
- £130 court costs
Previous Bans and Dangerous Driving Convictions
Fofana’s solicitor, Stephen Oldham, outlined the defender’s extensive driving history:
“He appeared before the court in May last year. He was disqualified as a totter. The offence on that occasion was dealt with by a two-year disqualification with 47 points.
He earns more than £200,000 a week.”
The court heard that Fofana must retake his driving test before being eligible for a licence again.
In October, the defender avoided jail after pleading guilty to dangerous driving, following footage showing him overtaking vehicles on the hard shoulder of a motorway in Surrey while driving a Lamborghini Urus.
That offence resulted in:
- 300 hours of unpaid community service
- £85 in costs
- £114 surcharge
- 18-month driving ban
Earlier Incidents Raise Serious Concerns
Last year, Fofana was also involved in a high-profile incident in which he ran over EastEnders actor Dean Gaffney, leaving the actor with a broken collarbone.
In May 2024, Fofana received a 38-point endorsement for eight separate speeding offences, resulting in a £7,569 fine at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court.
Off-Field Issues Amid Injury-Stricken Chelsea Career
The former Leicester City centre-back lives in a £3.5 million seven-bedroom mansion near Chelsea’s Cobham training base in Stoke d’Abernon, Surrey.
On the pitch, Fofana’s Chelsea career has been repeatedly disrupted by injuries. Since arriving at Stamford Bridge four years ago, he has often been managed carefully, typically starting one match per week. He has featured in three of Chelsea’s last six games.
