Wayne Rooney backs Liam Rosenior for Chelsea job: “One of the best coaches I’ve worked with”
Former England captain Wayne Rooney has thrown his full support behind Liam Rosenior, backing the Strasbourg boss to succeed Enzo Maresca as Chelsea head coach.
Rosenior is widely expected to be appointed at Stamford Bridge — potentially as early as today — and has strong endorsements from those who know him best. One of them is Rooney, who worked closely with Rosenior during their time together at Derby County, where Rosenior served as his assistant.

Speaking on his podcast, the Manchester United legend praised Rosenior’s coaching ability and described him as one of the standout coaches of his career.
“He took a risk and hopefully it will pay off because I think Liam is one of the best coaches I have ever worked with,” Rooney said.
“Liam was very important to me. He was incredible in his coaching abilities. I was more involved in interacting with the players, but I learned a lot from him in that regard, and I think overall he did a great job.”

Rooney also urged Rosenior to seize the opportunity, describing the Chelsea role as a rare chance for a young English coach to make a breakthrough at the highest level.
“If he moves to Chelsea, he won’t disappoint. He’s been waiting for this opportunity,” Rooney added.
“If you don’t take advantage of it now, you might never get another opportunity like this. He’s done his training, he’s worked hard to get to this point, and he’ll have no doubts that he’s up to the job.”

Rooney highlighted the wider significance of Rosenior’s potential appointment, pointing to the lack of English managers at elite clubs.
“Hopefully we’ll hear very soon that he’s become Chelsea manager, because it’s a huge opportunity for young English coaches,” he said.
“We don’t often see English managers at big clubs, so he’ll be a role model for us.”
