Troy Deeney has admitted he isn’t a fan of Chelsea’s Malo Gusto, revealing why he doesn’t rate the France international despite the defender’s strong performances this season.
Gusto has returned to near his best form this term, following a difficult campaign last season in which he struggled for consistency. Enzo Maresca has hailed Gusto as one of Chelsea’s key players, impressed with his performances both at right back and in midfield.
Deeney’s Take on Gusto
Gusto recently scored against Everton and provided an assist in arguably his best game in a Chelsea shirt since joining the club. While former player Danny Murphy described Chelsea as “blessed” to have the France international, Deeney’s view is far less flattering.
“I’m not the biggest lover of this fella if I’m being honest,” Deeney told BBC Sport.
“I can’t work out why I don’t rate him but I just don’t.
“But credit where credit is due, he scored a good goal and played well against Everton, who were poor.
“He seems to be stepping up. A goal and an assist. I have to be as fair as I can.”
The 22-year-old is reportedly in line to be offered a new contract and has made 21 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring twice and registering three assists.
Reece James Shines for Chelsea
While Gusto has impressed this season, Reece James appears to be back to his very best. The Chelsea captain completed three full matches in the space of a week last week, showing his durability and quality.
Like Gusto, James has excelled both at right back and in midfield. He was rested for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup win against Cardiff but is set to return to the starting line-up for Saturday’s Premier League clash at Newcastle, a venue where Chelsea haven’t enjoyed recent success.
