Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah praised his side’s resilience and tactical adaptability after they battled to a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, Chalobah admitted Chelsea struggled early on but highlighted how changes made at half-time helped the Blues grow into the contest and ultimately rescue a point.
“The first half was really tough,” Chalobah said. “We kept fighting and came out for the second half with a different attitude. The guys really dug into the game — that’s what we needed today.”
Tactical switch turned the game
Chalobah revealed that the interim coaching staff altered Chelsea’s approach at the break, particularly in how they defended City’s attacking players.
“We felt like we couldn’t play them tightly in the first half, so we changed our formation, and it worked well,” he explained.
The adjustment allowed Chelsea to compete more effectively against Pep Guardiola’s side, limiting City’s control and giving the visitors a foothold in the match.
Malo Gusto praised for attacking impact
Discussing Enzo Fernandez’s late equaliser, Chalobah highlighted the importance of Chelsea’s improved attacking structure and praised Malo Gusto’s contribution down the right flank.
“Malo showed his class by coming down the right flank,” Chalobah said. “We worked on having more players in the penalty area when we play the ball out wide, and we scored.”
Focus maintained despite chaotic week
Despite a turbulent week off the pitch following Enzo Maresca’s dismissal, Chalobah insisted the squad remained united and focused on the task at hand.
“You know what kind of week we’ve had, but the guys were focused,” he added. “We didn’t lose heart and kept working.
“We knew what the game plan was today. We knew what we wanted, and we worked hard to get the point.”
The result leaves Chelsea still firmly in the hunt for European qualification, with the performance offering encouragement ahead of the next phase of the season.
