Manchester United Legend Claims Chelsea Chose the Wrong Manager Over Fabregas

Chelsea’s decision to appoint Liam Rosenior as their new head coach has already sparked debate across the football world — and now a Manchester United legend has weighed in with a controversial take.

Rosenior was officially confirmed as Chelsea boss on Tuesday after completing a farewell press conference at Strasbourg earlier that morning. By the evening, he was already pictured at Cobham, marking his first official appearance as Chelsea’s new head coach.

While the club has moved quickly to usher in a new era following Enzo Maresca’s sudden New Year’s Day departure, not everyone is convinced the right appointment has been made.

Chelsea Fans Divided on Rosenior Appointment

It would be fair to say Rosenior’s arrival has not exactly sent Chelsea supporters into raptures.

Most fans are prepared to give him time and back him fully — as they always do — but there is a familiar concern lingering around Stamford Bridge. Once again, Chelsea have turned to a relatively inexperienced manager, one who has never coached in the Premier League or at the very highest level of European football.

That scepticism doesn’t mean Rosenior lacks qualities. By all accounts, he comes across as intelligent, articulate and thoughtful, with clear ideas about how he wants his teams to play. There are encouraging signs — but as ever at Chelsea, results will ultimately decide everything.

“Fabregas Might Have Been a Better Choice” – Paul Scholes

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes Chelsea may have missed a trick.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes suggested that Cesc Fabregas, currently managing Como in Italy, would have been a stronger option than Rosenior.

“Not for United,” Scholes said when asked about Fabregas potentially replacing Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

“But do you know what? I actually like what he’s doing and think he might have been a better choice for Chelsea than Liam Rosenior.”

“But he’s not right for Manchester United.”

It’s a statement that will certainly raise eyebrows among Chelsea fans — especially given Fabregas’ deep connection to the club.

Is Fabregas Actually Ready for Chelsea?

As tempting as the idea of Fabregas returning to Stamford Bridge as a manager might be, there’s a strong argument that now is not the right time.

The former Chelsea midfielder is doing impressive work at Como, steadily developing his coaching philosophy and gaining vital experience away from the Premier League spotlight. Rushing that process could do more harm than good — both for Fabregas and any elite club that appoints him too soon.

For now, staying put in Italy may be the best move for his long-term development.

A Future Chelsea Reunion?

One thing feels almost inevitable.

If Fabregas continues on his current trajectory, a return to Chelsea — this time in the dugout — feels like a matter of when, not if. But for now, the baton has been handed to Liam Rosenior.

He may not have been everyone’s first choice, but Chelsea fans will hope he proves the doubters wrong.

Because at Stamford Bridge, belief lasts only as long as results do.
