Chelsea Football Club: Legacy of Success and Transformation
Since its inception in April 1905, Chelsea Football Club has transformed to be one of the most-applauded and most recognizable football institutions in English and European football. From its modest start at Stamford Bridge to being a global force today, the club’s past has been punctuated by achievements, redesigns, and an ongoing passion for the game.
Origins of the Club
Chelsea Football Club was established on 20th April, 1905, by Henry Augustus ‘Gus’ Mears and Joseph Theophilus Mears after they bought Stamford Bridge Athletics Ground. The idea was to lease out the stadium to Fulham FC, but the brothers Mears were turned down, prompting them to establish a club of their own. After proposals such as Stamford Bridge FC, London FC, and Kensington FC, they eventually settled on Chelsea, naming the neighboring borough as their inspiration.
Evolution of the Badge
Over the decades, Chelsea has boasted eleven principal club crests, each giving a glimpse into a new era in its identity. The original badge featured a Chelsea Pensioner, referencing the early nickname for the club. This was subsequently phased out during the 1950s by manager Ted Drake, who wanted to give the club a more modern image.
The mid-century featured a more contemporary lion-inspired badge, with Chelsea experimenting with shield shapes, circular emblems, and sans-serif typography. The current crest—re-admitted in 2005 to mark the centenary of the club—reminds us of the 1953–64 lion crest but with clean lines and symbolic hues. The lion holding a staff now takes center stage, either side of which are a ring inscribed with the name of the club and two red roses.
Kit History
Chelsea’s classic royal blue strip did not emerge until 1906. Chelsea played its first games in green shirts and shorts. Chelsea played the next year in the now-standard blue shirts and white shorts, becoming the typical attire for the team. Chelsea switched to blue shorts in 1964 to go along with the shirts, taking on the all-blue look that is the symbol of the team’s modern image.
League Journey
Chelsea has never operated below the top two tiers of English football. Following their entry to the Football League in their inaugural 1905–06 campaign, the club was promoted into the First Division in two years. Chelsea has occupied the vast bulk of its existence in the top division since then, being in the second tier for short periods in 1910–12, 1924–30, 1962–63, 1975–77, 1979–84, and 1988–89.
Since the introduction of the Premier League in 1992, Chelsea was a founding member and has remained based in the competition ever since. During the modern era, the club has developed to be among the powerhouses in the league.
Trophy Cabinet
Chelsea’s first major domestic achievement was in 1954–55, when they were declared First Division champions. But it wasn’t until the Roman Abramovich years, beginning in 2003, that Chelsea began to consistently compete for top honors both at home and abroad.
Domestic Honors:
- Premier League Titles (5): 2004–05, 2005–06, 2009–10, 2014–15, 2016–17
- FA Cups (8): Including under Jose Mourinho and Roberto Di Matteo
- EFL Cups (5): Including victories in 2005 and 2015

European Success:
