Former Chelsea winger Noni Madueke made his debut for Arsenal on Wednesday night in a pre-season friendly against Villarreal at the Emirates Stadium — and it didn’t take long for Gunners fans to reach their verdict.
Madueke came off the bench late in the second half, replacing Gabriel Martinelli, and played just 13 minutes before the match went to penalties. Though he missed his spot-kick in the shootout — ultimately handing victory to Villarreal — his short cameo left a lasting impression on some Arsenal supporters.

Mixed Reactions, But Early Praise from Fans
Despite arriving from Chelsea in a £48.5 million move that raised eyebrows, many fans felt Madueke looked more direct and threatening than Martinelli on the wing.
Here’s a sample of the fan reaction on social media:
- “Madueke doing more in less than 5 mins than Martinelli did.”
- “I am sorry but Madueke is better than Martinelli.”
- “Madueke has done more than Martinelli on that wing.”
- “Madueke super direct I like that !! Keep coming at your man.”
- “Noni Madueke is a million times way ahead of Martinelli.”
The winger’s dribbling and fearless attacking intent seemed to resonate with supporters, despite the limited game time.
Arteta Impressed with Madueke’s Attitude
Speaking after the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the 22-year-old’s mindset:
“He showed a lot of desire to come and join us from day one. What he’s done is remarkable, how willing he is. I think the reception he got was brilliant as well.”
Madueke was the final summer recruit to make his debut for the Gunners, joining the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard, and Kepa Arrizabalaga in appearing at the Emirates for the first time.
More Questions Than Answers in Arsenal Attack?
While Madueke’s cameo was encouraging, questions remain about how Arsenal’s new attacking options will settle. £55m striker Viktor Gyokeres also featured, starting the game but managing just one shot on target in 62 minutes. Fans felt Arsenal’s tactical setup didn’t suit the Swede, with concerns already brewing about how best to get him firing.
What’s Next for Arsenal and Madueke?
Arsenal return to action in the Emirates Cup this Saturday against Athletic Club, giving fans another look at Madueke and the club’s other signings. The new Premier League campaign begins away at Manchester United on August 17, a tough early test for Arteta’s reshaped squad.
As for Madueke, he’ll be eager to prove himself at his new club — and on early evidence, some fans are already convinced he could be one of Arsenal’s standout players this season.
