Newcastle United Lead Chase for Chelsea Defender Axel Disasi
Newcastle United have emerged as the leading contenders to sign Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi this summer, with early talks already underway between the two clubs.
Disasi, 27, spent the latter half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, where he made just ten appearances. Despite limited playing time, Villa had been interested in turning the move permanent. However, their failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League disrupted their transfer plans, allowing other clubs to enter the frame.
Chelsea are actively looking to offload several players this summer, and Disasi is among those made available for transfer. The French defender was notably excluded from the squad for the Club World Cup, further signaling his diminished role under new head coach Enzo Maresca.
Disasi arrived at Stamford Bridge from AS Monaco in the summer of 2023 for a reported £39 million. Under former manager Mauricio Pochettino, he was a regular fixture in the starting lineup, impressing with his strength and composure in defence. However, since Maresca’s appointment, his involvement has been limited to just three Premier League appearances in the first half of the 2024/25 season. Most of his game time came in Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League campaign.

Although Juventus and Villarreal have also shown interest in the France international, Disasi is understood to prefer staying in the Premier League. Newcastle, who have long admired the defender, have now taken concrete steps toward securing his services.
Chelsea are reportedly seeking €35 million for Disasi’s transfer, but Newcastle are optimistic they can negotiate the fee down to around €30 million. Discussions between the clubs are ongoing.
With Newcastle aiming to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season, and Disasi keen to re-establish himself as a top-tier centre-back in England, the move could suit both parties. A deal could be agreed in the coming weeks, depending on progress in negotiations.
