Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has given a clear update on his squad ahead of the crucial Champions League showdown against Atalanta in Bergamo,
The main focus of the press conference was the condition of Liam Delap, who was forced off in the first half of Saturday’s match against Bournemouth. Maresca confirmed that the young striker’s shoulder injury “looks pretty bad”, though medical tests fortunately ruled out any fracture. Despite that positive news, Delap is still expected to be absent for several weeks — a major setback for Chelsea’s attacking options.
Palmer left out as part of recovery plan
The situation surrounding Cole Palmer, who did not travel with the squad to Italy, was less concerning. Maresca made it clear that Palmer’s exclusion was entirely planned.
“Liam, fortunately, doesn’t have a fracture. As for Cole, it’s part of his recovery process. He can’t play two matches in three days. This is a way to protect him and give him the opportunity to get back into top shape,” Maresca explained.
Palmer, dealing with ongoing groin issues and a recently healed fractured toe, stayed behind in London to continue his individual conditioning work. The club expects him to be fully ready for Saturday’s Premier League match against Everton.
With both Delap and Palmer unavailable, Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro are set to take on central roles in Chelsea’s attack for the match in Bergamo.
Defensive boost
The biggest positive for the Blues comes in defense. Maresca confirmed that Reece James and Wesley Fofana have both returned to full availability and are part of the travelling squad.
“Reece James and Wes Fofana are with us, both available. You’ll see the starting lineup tomorrow.”
Chelsea will hope that the return of two key defenders provides the stability needed in what promises to be a decisive Champions League encounter.
