Marc Guiu breaks silence on Chelsea future amid Sunderland return rumours
Chelsea striker Marc Guiu has underlined his determination to “succeed” at Stamford Bridge after recent reports claimed he was open to rejoining Sunderland in January.
The 19-year-old was recalled from his loan spell at the Stadium of Light earlier this season following Liam Delap’s injury, with Chelsea keen to bolster their attacking options.
Despite that, Guiu had to wait until last weekend’s 2–1 win over Liverpool to make his first appearance since returning — a late cameo that hinted at more chances to come under Enzo Maresca.
Guiu Dismisses Sunderland Return Talk
Reports in Spain had suggested that Guiu was eyeing a return to the Championship club in January in search of regular minutes. However, under FIFA rules, players can only represent two clubs per season, meaning the young Spaniard’s only options for the rest of 2025/26 are Chelsea or Sunderland.
Speaking to RTVE, Guiu made it clear that he is fully committed to fighting for his place in west London.
“We initially decided to go to Sunderland with great enthusiasm to get some minutes and experience,” Guiu said.
“In the end, there was an injury [to Delap], and I had to return to Chelsea, now with great enthusiasm and training hard every day.
“It was all a bit chaotic, but I’m someone who faces everything with positivity. Now I’m just enjoying every moment — because a footballer’s career is short.”
When asked if he was disappointed to miss out on a regular starting role at Sunderland, Guiu was firm in his response.
“No, never disappointment. Every decision I make in my career is because I want to. I’m going to fight in every training session, every game, every minute.
“Now I’m at Chelsea, and that’s where I am. I’m from Chelsea — the best club in the world for me right now.”
Opportunity Ahead for Guiu
With Chelsea set for a hectic run of seven matches between October 18 and November 8, Guiu is expected to feature at some stage as Maresca looks to rotate his attacking options.
The young Spaniard has only accumulated 820 minutes of senior football across 27 appearances for Barcelona, Chelsea, and Sunderland, and will be eager to prove he can handle Premier League demands.
With Liam Delap due to return from injury in December, Guiu has a valuable window of opportunity to impress. How he performs in the coming weeks could determine whether he cements his place in Maresca’s long-term plans.
