Liam Delap finally has his first Premier League goal in a Chelsea shirt — and there’s a growing sense that the striker may at last be turning a corner.
The 21-year-old found the net in Wednesday night’s 2-1 defeat to Fulham, building on what had already been an encouraging second-half cameo against Manchester City at the weekend. In a season short on positives, Delap’s upward curve offers at least a flicker of light.
“I’m Starting to Feel Good Again”
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website after the match, Delap was candid about how difficult his start to life at Stamford Bridge has been.
“It’s been a difficult start for me with a few injuries and then it’s always difficult to get sharp and get going,” Delap said.
“I’ve got to a period now where I’m starting to feel good, so hopefully that can carry on and continue until the end of the season.”
It’s an explanation Chelsea supporters have heard repeatedly — but not without reason. Delap’s game is built on physicality, aggression and timing, all of which are hard to rediscover without consistent minutes and fitness.
If he is finally over his injury issues, Chelsea may yet see the striker they thought they were buying.
A Much-Needed Boost in a Gloomy Spell
Chelsea’s wider situation remains bleak. Results are poor, confidence is low, and Stamford Bridge is increasingly restless.
That makes Delap’s goal feel more significant than the scoreline suggests. Chelsea desperately need someone to shoulder responsibility in the final third — and if Delap can grow into that role, it would be a timely lift for both squad and supporters.
Familiar Face: Rosenior Could Be Key
Delap is also optimistic about working again under Liam Rosenior, who managed him briefly during his loan spell at Hull City.
“I know him really well and he’s a top manager so hopefully he can help the players and we can just start from that,” Delap added.
“I think he’s a really exciting young manager and he loves to play football.”
That existing relationship could be crucial. Rosenior has previously shown trust in Delap and understands how to get the best out of him — something Chelsea’s previous setups struggled to do.
Time to Kick On
There’s still a long way to go before Delap convinces everyone he can be Chelsea’s long-term No.9. His hold-up play, touch and decision-making all need sharpening.
But confidence matters for strikers — and goals change narratives quickly.
If this is the moment Delap finally gets up to speed, Chelsea may have stumbled upon an internal solution at a time when they need one more than ever.
