Jermain Defoe Names Claude Makelele as Toughest Opponent at Chelsea
Chelsea has long been one of the Premier League’s toughest sides to face, and over the past 25 years, players have often struggled to break them down. Led by legends such as John Terry, Frank Lampard, and Didier Drogba, the Blues have won the Premier League five times since 2000, creating a reputation that even the best strikers found intimidating.
While big names often grab the headlines, Chelsea’s success has also been built on players whose contributions are sometimes overlooked. One of those is Claude Makelele, the French midfielder who also starred for Real Madrid and PSG.
Former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe recently revealed on TNT Sports’ TikTok that Makelele made Chelsea incredibly difficult to play against. “Probably the Chelsea team. When you had Makelele just standing in front of the back four, and you couldn’t get the ball. That team.” While many fans remember Terry or Lampard as the key figures in Jose Mourinho’s first Chelsea side, Makelele’s influence on the pitch often went underappreciated, frustrating opponents and inspiring his teammates.

Chelsea’s midfield remains one of their strongest areas today, and current star Moisés Caicedo has cited Makelele as an inspiration in developing his own game. Caicedo is quickly proving to be vital for the Blues, showing similar control and tactical intelligence in the heart of midfield.
The Ecuadorian international returned to the starting XI for Chelsea’s clash against Cardiff City after serving a three-match suspension, and the break could have strengthened his impact on the team. He is expected to start again for the upcoming Premier League game at Newcastle, as Chelsea aim to close the gap on Aston Villa and continue their push in the table.
