Enzo Maresca Defends Rotation After Chelsea’s Defeat as John Terry Questions Strategy

Enzo Maresca has responded to criticism over his squad rotation after Chelsea’s disappointing 3-1 defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road on Wednesday. The Chelsea boss made several changes to the starting lineup—decisions that did not sit well with many supporters, including club legend John Terry.

After keeping his lineup consistent in the matches against Barcelona and Arsenal, Maresca opted for rotation against Leeds. The most noticeable shift came in defence. Benoît Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo formed the centre-back pairing, while Trevoh Chalobah was pushed out to right-back.

John Terry Questions the Rotation

Chelsea icon John Terry didn’t hide his frustration.
On TikTok, Terry suggested the manager should reconsider his rotational approach:

“Maybe that’s an opportunity for the manager to look at the squad and go, ‘OK, rotations are not for me moving forward. I know my best starting 11, 13, or 14 players — I’m going to stick with that, and the players are just going to have to deal with it.’”

We can’t follow two great performances with that performance tonight. Some tough away games coming up and we need to be better than that tonight. 💙 #chelsea #chelseafc #premierleague #cfc

Many fans agreed with Terry’s sentiment, believing the changes disrupted Chelsea’s momentum and structure.

Maresca: “We Needed to Protect Key Players”

Speaking to Chelsea’s in-house media, Maresca admitted the rotation may have affected the rhythm of the team — but insisted it was unavoidable.

“Probably,” he said when asked if the changes hurt the team.
“For different reasons, we needed to make changes. To protect players like Wes (Fofana), Reece (James)… Moi (Caicedo) is out suspended — all important players for us. We need to make the changes to protect the players that are very important for us. But even after making changes, you have to come here and perform much better.”

Injuries Force Maresca’s Hand

Chelsea’s defensive options have been stretched thin.
Both Reece James and Wesley Fofana have endured long injury histories, and Maresca is understandably cautious about overloading them. Meanwhile, Levi Colwill remains sidelined with a long-term cruciate ligament injury — leaving the Blues without one of their strongest defenders.

With Caicedo suspended, Chelsea’s overall structure was always going to be tested. Although the rotations were necessary, the team’s performance fell short of the standards required to win at Elland Road.

Looking Ahead

Chelsea now face pressure to bounce back quickly. Maresca must balance squad fitness with performance levels — and with legends like Terry commenting publicly, every decision will be under the spotlight.
