Enzo Fernández Reveals How He Forced Through His Dream Move to Chelsea

Benfica initially refused to sell mid-season, and Fernandez had to personally appeal to Rui Costa to allow the move. Speaking to GiveMeSport, he said:
“When Chelsea approached me, I had no doubts. I wanted to make a sporting leap by moving to the Premier League… I wanted to join Chelsea at any cost and didn’t want to miss this opportunity.”
Fernandez made it clear that had he stayed silent, the deal might never have happened:
“I said to Rui Costa, ‘Please let me fulfil my dream of playing in the Premier League for a big club like Chelsea,’ and luckily he understood. It was a historic transfer.”
His determination paid off — Chelsea activated the €121m release clause, and the move went through at the very last moment of the transfer deadline.
Fernandez concluded:
“I still had to speak to the Benfica president at the last minute to ask him to let me go… you never know in football. I wanted to move to the Premier League and join Chelsea, and I’m delighted with my decision.”
Today, he remains grateful — both for the chance and for Rui Costa’s eventual approval — and firmly sees Stamford Bridge as the club where he belongs.
