Didier Drogba Draws Chelsea Comparison as He Explains Nigeria AFCON ‘Failure’ Reaction

Chelsea and African football legend Didier Drogba has opened up on the immense pressure surrounding national teams in Africa — using Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign as an example to explain how expectations can turn quickly from praise to criticism.

Speaking to SportyTV, Drogba reflected on how the Super Eagles’ second-place finish was received by fans, drawing a parallel to the mentality at Stamford Bridge, where even finishing runners-up is viewed as a disappointment.

Drogba: “At Chelsea, Second Doesn’t Count”

Nigeria reached the AFCON final earlier this year but were heavily criticised after losing in the decider. Drogba, who captained Ivory Coast and won multiple titles with Chelsea, said the backlash reflects the expectations that come with past success.

“They [Nigeria] reached the final of the African Cup of Nations. You supported them throughout the campaign, and then suddenly they lose – that’s it, the end! They’re criticised left and right, and that’s always the case in Africa,” Drogba said.

The former Chelsea striker believes such reactions come from a winning culture, not from a lack of appreciation.

“It’s like being at Chelsea and finishing second in the Premier League. It doesn’t count. That’s the level of expectation because you’ve won before,” he added.

Chelsea’s Mentality Reflected in Drogba’s Words

Drogba’s comments perfectly capture the high standards that define Chelsea Football Club — a side that has long been known for its relentless pursuit of trophies.

Just as Super Eagles fans demand titles from their national team, Chelsea supporters and the club’s hierarchy expect nothing less than silverware each season.

For Drogba, that mindset — whether in London or Lagos — is the mark of a true winning institution.

“Once you’ve set a standard, people expect you to stay there,” he concluded.
