Chelsea Confirm Zak Sturge Exit as Young Defender Joins Millwall Permanently

Chelsea’s first team are riding high following their historic Club World Cup triumph, but behind the scenes, the club has quietly bid farewell to one of its promising young defenders.

Zak Sturge, who joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2022, has completed a permanent move to Millwall after spending last season on loan at the Championship club.

Sturge Bids Farewell to Chelsea
The 20-year-old left-back announced his departure in a heartfelt message on Instagram:

“After three years at Chelsea it’s time for me to say goodbye. I want to thank the club, the fans, and everyone who has supported me during my time here. I’ve learnt so much and I’m grateful for the memories I’ve made here. I wish everyone at the club the best for the future.”

While Sturge never made a senior appearance for the Blues, he was a regular in the U21s and was occasionally called up to train with the first team under former head coach Graham Potter.

Reinforcements for the Academy
Chelsea have already taken steps to strengthen their youth setup, with Kian Best completing a medical ahead of a move to Stamford Bridge. The highly regarded left-back is expected to take Sturge’s place in the academy ranks.

Cobham’s Influence Continues
Sturge’s departure coincides with a time of celebration at the club, following Chelsea’s 3–0 demolition of PSG in the Club World Cup final. That victory featured strong performances from three Cobham academy graduates — Reece James, Levi Colwill, and Trevoh Chalobah — all of whom played key roles in the win.

Under Enzo Maresca, Chelsea have embraced their youth system, with players like Shumaira Mheuka also earning first-team opportunities in European fixtures. The club has maintained a clear and promising development pathway between the academy and senior squad.

Praise from John Terry
Chelsea legend John Terry, who continues to support the club’s youth setup, publicly praised Sturge for his performances with the U21s. His endorsement highlighted the defender’s potential, even though a senior breakthrough at Stamford Bridge ultimately didn’t materialise.

What’s Next for Zak Sturge?
The move to Millwall represents a chance for Sturge to gain consistent first-team experience in a highly competitive environment. With the Lions aiming to build a young, dynamic side, the transfer offers the left-back a platform to showcase his talent and continue his development.

As Chelsea reshape both their senior and youth squads, Sturge joins a growing list of academy prospects forging their path beyond Stamford Bridge — with the full backing of the club that helped nurture their potential.
