Chelsea Women suffered their first WSL defeat since May 2024, as Sonia Bompastor’s side were beaten 1-0 by Everton at Kingsmeadow. The shock loss ends the Blues’ 34-game unbeaten run and leaves them six points behind league leaders Manchester City.
Early Shock: Hayashi Punishes Sluggish Chelsea
Everton stunned the home crowd just 12 minutes in when Toni Payne burst down the right flank, fired a low cross through the box, and Honoka Hayashi slid in at the far post to finish.
Chelsea struggled to respond, with sloppy midfield play and a lack of cutting edge allowing Everton to grow in confidence.
Goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan made key saves, while Ruby Mace and her defensive partners worked tirelessly to shut down Chelsea’s attacks.
Chelsea Improve but Can’t Break Through
Chelsea came out early for the second half with increased intensity. The introduction of Sam Kerr brought life to the front line, finally giving the Blues a sharper attacking edge.
Their biggest chance came from a Sandy Baltimore corner, which deflected off an Everton defender, hit the post, and caused chaos in the six-yard box—but somehow stayed out.
In stoppage time, Chelsea nearly rescued a point, only to see an effort cleared off the line and Wieke Kaptein’s header crash off the crossbar.
On another day, the Blues could easily have scored two or three—but this time, the finishing touch wasn’t there.
