Alfie Gilchrist to Leave Chelsea This Summer
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, 21-year-old Gilchrist is not going to be part of Chelsea’s long-term project and will most likely receive a permanent departure in the face of strong Championship interest.

Gilchrist impressed during a season-long loan stint at Sheffield United, where he made 30 appearances in the Championship, but it seems his displays were inadequate to convince Maresca and Chelsea’s hierarchy.

But with Chelsea strengthened in those positions — Reece James, Malo Gusto, and talented young Josh Acheampong — Gilchrist’s path to regular first-team football has been blocked.

Club great John Terry once heaped praise on Gilchrist’s talent, saying:

“From literally the first training session when I walked in and had a look at him, he reminded me of me. He was keen to learn, questioning me about how to defend and draining my brain continuously.”

Although Terry resonated with the youngster, Chelsea’s current project does not offer much room for emotional decisions. The club is currently concentrating on elite development pathways and trimming the wage bill for next season 2025/26.
