Chelsea Transfer news: £225m Fire Sale Begins as Alfie Gilchrist Set for Permanent Exit
Chelsea Transfer Clear-Out: £225m Fire Sale Has Begun as Alfie Gilchrist Considers Permanant Exit
Chelsea are preparing themselves for an summer overhaul of biblical proportions as co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley look to offload as much as £225 million in surplus quality — with several older players and one academy graduate now considering exit from Stamford Bridge.
Among them are high-profile players such as Raheem Sterling, João Félix, and Ben Chilwell, all of whom have fallen out of favour with head coach Enzo Maresca. One departure set to surprise supporters, though, is that of academy product Alfie Gilchrist, who is now likely to leave the club on a permanent deal.
Alfie Gilchrist to Leave Chelsea This Summer
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, 21-year-old Gilchrist is not going to be part of Chelsea’s long-term project and will most likely receive a permanent departure in the face of strong Championship interest.

Gilchrist impressed during a season-long loan stint at Sheffield United, where he made 30 appearances in the Championship, but it seems his displays were inadequate to convince Maresca and Chelsea’s hierarchy.
Versatility has been a key bulwark for Gilchrist, who has played in:
Position | Total Games Played |
---|---|
Centre-back | 78 |
Right-back | 40 |
Left-back | 1 |
But with Chelsea strengthened in those positions — Reece James, Malo Gusto, and talented young Josh Acheampong — Gilchrist’s path to regular first-team football has been blocked.
John Terry’s Praise: “He Reminded Me of Myself”
Club great John Terry once heaped praise on Gilchrist’s talent, saying:
“From literally the first training session when I walked in and had a look at him, he reminded me of me. He was keen to learn, questioning me about how to defend and draining my brain continuously.”

Although Terry resonated with the youngster, Chelsea’s current project does not offer much room for emotional decisions. The club is currently concentrating on elite development pathways and trimming the wage bill for next season 2025/26.
Who Else Is Expected to Leave?
Chelsea are preparing to sell or loan a series of experienced players in the summer rebuild:
Raheem Sterling – Underperformed and not likely to be well placed in Maresca’s high-intensity system.
João Félix – Loan spells not translated into consistency; seen as spare man.
Ben Chilwell – Injuries and tactical misfit may see him sold on.
Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr – Not included in Maresca’s long-term plans.
Alfie Gilchrist – Set for permanent exit despite promise and versatility.
