Chelsea Set Sights on Midfield Reinforcements Ahead of January
January is almost here, and Chelsea fans know what that means — the transfer rumour mill is starting to spin! And our first big update this season comes courtesy of the well-connected Telegraph journalist, Matt Law.
Midfield in the spotlight
According to Law, the Blues’ priority in 2026 is clear: strengthening the midfield to take some pressure off Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández.
“Chelsea recruitment in 2026 will centre on boosting the club’s midfield options and easing the load placed on Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández,” says Law.
Depth exists, but it’s fragile
On paper, Chelsea have some young midfielders ready to step in — Andrey Santos, Dario Essugo, and Romeo Lavia. But injuries and form have made things tricky. Lavia is battling through his third injury-hit season, while Essugo has yet to make a single appearance this term.
Squad stretched in unexpected areas
This has meant Maresca has leaned on Malo Gusto and Reece James in midfield roles, which leaves other parts of the squad thinner than fans would like. It’s been a test of squad depth, and clearly, Chelsea want to avoid it happening again.

January action already in motion
Law adds that Chelsea are already working behind the scenes to identify targets, with at least one new midfielder expected to join in 2026.
“Chelsea will sign at least one new midfielder in 2026. Work has already started on next summer’s window, with Chelsea identifying the midfield as a key area to address and researching potential targets.”
Who could arrive?
Names like Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton have surfaced again, though fans will know the key will be getting someone reliable and ready to step in immediately — no risky gambles this time.
What this means for Chelsea fans
The message is clear: Maresca and the Chelsea board are serious about making sure the squad is ready to challenge on all fronts. A new midfielder could make a big difference, allowing stars like Caicedo, Fernández, James, and Gusto to play in their preferred roles without being overworked.
Chelsea supporters can be hopeful — the Blues are clearly planning to hit the January window hard, and this could be the start of a much stronger second half of the season!
