Chelsea Win Victory in the “Estêvão Derby” Despite Injury Woes

What began as an experimental lineup turned into a patchwork side by kickoff, with Moisés Caicedo suspended, Roméo Lavia sidelined (again) by a muscular injury, and Reece James suffering a late setback—reportedly another muscular issue—forcing Andrey Santos into an unexpected midfield start.

Yet, despite the disruptions, Chelsea showed enough resilience to secure a hard-fought win in a match that had been hyped as the “Estêvão Derby”—a nod to the Palmeiras teenager heavily linked with the Blues. Even broadcasters DAZN and Whistle Sports leaned into the narrative, spotlighting Chelsea insider David Pasztor’s reporting on the Brazilian wonderkid.

First Half: Bright Start, Fading Control

Chelsea began with intent, pressing high and looking sharp—perhaps a statement of their ambitions in this competition, especially after recent financial penalties made every bit of prize money crucial. However, as has happened too often this season, the early energy waned, allowing Palmeiras to grow into the game.

Estêvão had his moments, as did Facundo Torres on the opposite flank, but Robert Sánchez and Chelsea’s backline held firm. The midfield battle grew increasingly physical, with cards flying as the half progressed—Liam Delap and Levi Colwill both picked up suspensions, a costly development given the stakes. (At least Nicolas Jackson is now available again—though Chelsea’s strikers collecting needless bans shouldn’t become a trend.)

Second Half: Estêvão Strikes, Chelsea Responds

The Brazilian prodigy made his mark early in the second half, firing a near-post finish past Sánchez from a tight angle after outmaneuvering Colwill. The goal injected urgency into Chelsea’s play, prompting Mauricio Pochettino to introduce Noni Madueke and new signing João Pedro.

The changes paid off. João Pedro, in particular, looked lively, carving out chances in the dying minutes as Chelsea pushed for control. While the overall performance wasn’t vintage, the Blues were the better side in a scrappy, tackle-heavy midfield battle.
