Chelsea and Arsenal lock horns on Wednesday night in a blockbuster EFL Cup semi-final first leg, with both sides desperate to take control of the tie under the Stamford Bridge lights.

For Chelsea, it represents the first true acid test of Liam Roseniorโ€™s reign. For Arsenal, itโ€™s another opportunity to underline their domestic dominance and move one step closer to a potential silverware sweep in 2026.

Chelsea: Roseniorโ€™s First Major Test

Chelsea officially ushered in the Liam Rosenior era with a routine 5โ€“1 FA Cup win away at Charlton Athletic on Saturday. However, that result does little to disguise the turbulence of the past fortnight.

The messy departure of Enzo Maresca earlier this month highlighted deeper issues at the club, and those problems have often translated onto the pitch. Last time out in Premier League action, the Blues fell to a frustrating 2โ€“1 defeat against Fulham, extending a worrying run of form.

Chelsea have now failed to win any of their last five matches against Premier League opposition (three draws, two defeats), and their grip on a top-half finish is far from secure. While they did manage a resilient 1โ€“1 draw against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on November 30, Rosenior will be under no illusions about the scale of the challenge he faces on Wednesday night.

Chelsea Team News

Chelsea will be without Marc Cucurella, who serves a one-match suspension following his red card against Fulham.

Levi Colwill remains sidelined with a knee injury and has yet to feature this season.

There is good news in attack, however. Cole Palmer, rested entirely for the FA Cup win at Charlton, is expected to return to the starting XI. Likewise, Enzo Fernรกndez, who has scored in three of his last four appearances in all competitions, should feature prominently as Chelsea look to assert control in midfield.

Arsenal: Title-Chasers on a Mission

Arsenal arrive in west London brimming with confidence. The Gunners avoided an FA Cup banana skin on Sunday with a 4โ€“1 win away at Portsmouth, keeping alive hopes of a historic domestic trophy haul.

Mikel Artetaโ€™s side currently sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League, firmly on course for a first league title since 2004. Their form across all competitions has been outstanding, with Arsenal suffering just one defeat since the end of August.

Their away form has been particularly ruthless. Including a thrilling 3โ€“2 victory at Bournemouth to start the new year, Arsenal have won four consecutive away matches, outscoring opponents 11โ€“3 in that run.

Arsenal Team News

Arsenal are expected to be without Piero Hincapiรฉ, who picked up a muscle injury against Liverpool last week.

Riccardo Calafiori also remains unavailable, having not featured since late December.

Both Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were rested at Portsmouth and are set for immediate recalls. Summer signing Viktor Gyรถkeres, however, may have to settle for a place on the bench amid growing scrutiny over his recent performances.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Chelsea and Arsenal played out a 1โ€“1 draw at Stamford Bridge on November 30
  • Chelsea are winless in five matches against Premier League opposition
  • Arsenal have lost only once in all competitions since August
  • The Gunners have won four straight away games, scoring 11 and conceding just three
  • Both teams have scored in four of the last five meetings at Stamford Bridge

This Carabao Cup semi-final first leg promises intensity, quality and narrative. Chelsea will lean on home support and the new-manager bounce, but Arsenal arrive as one of Europeโ€™s most complete sides and are thriving away from home.

While Rosenior will hope to replicate Novemberโ€™s draw, the statistics โ€” and current momentum โ€” point firmly towards the visitors having the edge heading into Wednesday night.
