Chelsea are reportedly in negotiations with Lyon over a potential January transfer involving defender Axel Disasi, as the club continues efforts to reduce the wage bill and trim players outside Enzo Maresca’s plans.
According to L’Équipe, Lyon urgently need defensive reinforcements ahead of the second half of the season and have identified the 27-year-old Frenchman as a leading candidate.
From Monaco standout to Chelsea outcast
Chelsea signed Disasi in the summer of 2023 after his strong performances for Monaco and the French national team. Although he initially showed promise, his place in the squad quickly faded.
He later spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, but the Blues remained unable to find a permanent buyer during the summer window.
Now under Maresca, Disasi is firmly outside the first-team picture. With a contract running until 2029, he has had zero minutes this season and is among the players placed in the so-called “Bomb Squad” — the group training away from the main squad.
Lyon pushing for a deal — but concerns remain
Lyon, coached by Paulo Fonseca, are particularly motivated to secure defensive cover as two key players, Clinton Mata and Moussa Niakhaté, will be absent during the Africa Cup of Nations.
Talks between the clubs are focused on a loan deal until the end of the season, with both Chelsea and the player open to a temporary departure.
However, there is a complication:
Lyon want a defender ready to start immediately, while Disasi may need time to regain full match sharpness after months without competitive action.
A move that suits all sides — if fitness allows
For Chelsea, loaning Disasi removes wages and keeps the squad streamlined. For Lyon, he could be a much-needed reinforcement — provided he can get back to match rhythm quickly.
The coming weeks will determine whether Lyon push ahead or explore alternatives, but Disasi’s Chelsea chapter looks to be nearing another pause.
